The BNP has started picking mayoral candidates for the municipal election. This strongly suggests that the party is going to contest in the ballot.

Dec 3 is the last date for nominating the aspirants.

The BNP had asked the Election Commission to extend the nomination deadline by 15 days but the polls officials did not agree.

The party’s Joint Secretary General Mohammad Shahjahan handed nominations to several candidates at Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office on Tuesday night to set the process in motion.

Those nominated so far are Masud Rana for Rajshahi’s Katakhali municipality, Sheikh Maqbul Hossain for Nawhata and Mohiuddin for Kushtia’s Bherhamara.

The BNP boycotted the 2014 general elections but has since contested all local government elections.

Bangladesh’s first-ever civic election on party lines is slated for Dec 30.

“We’ve taken the municipal vote as a political challenge… to restore democratic practices,” Shahjahan told reporters.
