In addition, the JP wants the polls to be deferred by 10 days.

A five-member delegation led by JP Secretary General Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu met Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Sunday morning and placed the demands.

“We have raised three demands before the Election Commission: that the elections be deferred, that MPs be allowed to participate in the election campaign and that all measures be taken to ensure impartial and uninfluenced polls,” Bablu told the press after the meeting.

“The commission said it would take all necessary steps to keep the elections impartial, but deferring the voting day and allowing MPs to engage in electioneering would be difficult.”

“However, the commission will consider them and let us know later,” the JP leader added.

Earlier in the morning, an AL delegation went to the EC with the demand that the commission allow lawmakers to campaign for the mayoral aspirants.

According to the existing schedule, Dec 3 is the last date for filing nominations for the 236 municipalities going to the polls on Dec 30.

The BNP and the Workers Party of Bangladesh too had earlier demanded a rescheduling of the polls.
