A delegation led by the party’s Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif met the chief election commissioner on Sunday.

He told reporters that they put up their arguments during the meeting.

“Members of Parliament do not hold any executive power and do not enjoy government facilities,” Hanif said. “They have a right to take part in campaigning in partisan local polls.

“We’ve asked the EC to lift the ban on MPs and allow them to campaign.”

The Dec 30 polls to 236 municipalities will be the first civic elections on party lines.

Hanif claimed that denying the MPs an opportunity to campaign runs “against the spirit of the Constitution”.

Replying to a question, he said only the ministers “enjoy government privileges”.

“It is their (local MPs) right to campaign in local polls. We’ve asked the EC not to deprive them (MPs) of their rights,” the Awami League leader added.

He said the CEC had told them that he would discuss the Awami League’s demands with the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, the ruling party will meet on Monday to finalise its candidates.

A media statement from the party said Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would preside over the meeting scheduled to start at 6pm at Ganabhaban.

The candidates will need Hasina’s recommendation to file nominations.
