The Committee and the Parliamentary Board of the ruling party took the decision in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday.
The polls to 236 municipalities are scheduled for Dec 30. The last date to submit nomination papers is Dec 3.
Awami League’s Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap in a media statement said the presidents and general secretaries of corresponding district, Upazila, town or municipality will nominate a candidate in consultation with the local MPs.
All information on the candidate needed for the nomination in line with election rules will have to be submitted to the Awami League chief Hasina’s office by Nov 30.
A leader who took part in the meeting said the local leaders could send more than one name if they did not have a consensus.
The Central Working Committee will then take the final decision and make announcements accordingly, he said.
The Awami League candidates will fight with the party’s ‘boat’ symbol.
