Councillor candidates of municipality elections will have to be happy with non-party symbols once the Local Government (Municipality) (Amendment) Bill-2015, tabled on Sunday, is passed.

The government is bringing the change within weeks of issuing an ordinance to hold municipal polls on party lines.

The bill was forwarded to the parliamentary panel on LGRD ministry for vetting after LGRD Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain tabled it.

The committee is expected to return it within three days.

The Cabinet last month cleared the amendments for holding elections to local government bodies on party lines.

But as the Election Commission planned to organise municipal polls in December and Union Parishad elections in January, the government said it would issue an ordinance and pass the other amendments in Parliament.

The ordinance to hold the municipal polls on party lines was issued on Nov 2 and placed in Parliament on Nov 8.

The EC then made rules in line with the ordinance and sent them to the law ministry.

Media reports said the law would be amended again when the rules were due to return.

The LGRD minister on Sunday tabled the amendment bill.
