“First, to repress militancy a democratic environment must be achieved through a free and fair election,” Moudud Ahmed said on Saturday at a discussion organised by the party.

“Secondly, all democratic and political organisations of the country must unite to repress terrorism and militancy.”

He said Bangladesh would become militancy-free if these two ways were followed.

He alleged that militants were getting a chance to rise because the government was trying to weaken the country’s democratic forces.

Regarding the murders of writers and bloggers, the BNP Standing Committee member blamed the government for trying to restrain the democratic forces. He said this was encouraging extremists to take a chance in destabilising the country.

“The government is surely responsible for the current chaos,” he said.

Ahmed alleged, “We think they (government) have taken this horrible path hoping to remain in power with international support.”

He urged the government to stop repressing opposition leaders and activists and work on reviving a democratic environment in the country instead.
