His remarks are an echo of the claim made by the BNP.

“The people have lost their freedom of speech. They have lost the right to live and vote,” the Jatiya Party chairman said on Sunday at a programme in Comilla’s Town Hall.

Apparently disappointed with the political situation in the country, the former military strongman said, “If you protest, your body will be found in the streets. People are being repressed everyday.”

He was speaking at the conference of his party’s South Comilla unit. The sitting Water Resources Minister Aminul Islam Mahmud was on stage at the time.

He is a presidium member of Jatiya Party, the Opposition in Parliament.

Ershad also vented his frustration over the hike in gas, power prices. “There is no logic for such hike. Many have urged them not to increase the price. They do not listen to anybody.

“The government does not understand the tears of the people. The government will have to answer for this one day.”

He further claimed that good governance was missing in Bangladesh.

“In our days, students would touch the teachers’ feet for blessing. Now I see teachers get beaten up by students.

“Law and order is failing. There is no law and order anywhere.”

He continued that the people did not want to see the Awami League or the BNP in power but wanted Jatiya Party.

He urged leaders and activists to become active.
