SUST vice-chancellor should resign over assault on teachers, says Suranjit Sengupta

The vice chancellor of the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), who is facing charges of unleashing students on demonstrating teachers, should resign from office, senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta has said.

“A vice chancellor who uses his students for his own gains has no right to stay in office,” he told a discussion in Dhaka on Monday.

He urged the education minister to rush to Sylhet to resolve the matter.

On Sunday, activists of the ruling Awami League’s student front, Bangladesh Chhatra League, attacked a section of SUST teachers demonstrating for the VC’s removal.

But the BCL claimed the attackers were not its activists.

“We’re embarrassed at Chhatra League’s name being associated with the attack on the teachers,” said Awami League Advisory Council member Sengupta, a parliamentarian from Sylhet’s Sunamganj.

“The Chhatra League central command should take steps on this matter,” he suggested.
