A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha gave the order on Monday after hearing a plea by the BNP leader.

On July 13, the Appellate Division had on health grounds upheld a six-week High Court bail given to Fakhrul in the three cases with Paltan police. It ordered him to surrender in the trial court after the time ended.

Fakhrul’s counsel Joynul Abedin moved the court to be granted another eight weeks. On Aug 24, the Chamber Judge sent it for hearing to a regular bench.

The state was represented by Additional Attorney General Md Momtaz Uddin Fakir during Monday’s hearing. As a result of the order, Mirza Fakhrul’s bail was effectively extended by another six weeks.

His lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon said Mirza Fakhrul went to Singapore on July 26 for better medical treatment and from there to New York on Aug 11.

The acting secretary general was under care at the prison cell of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for six months before his release on July 13.

Mirza Fakhrul was arrested on Jan 6 after emerging from a media briefing at the National Press Club. Later, police showed him arrested in seven cases of violence involving arson, damage and explosion.

The High Court on Apr 16 granted him six months’ bail in a case filed with Paltan police.

On Jun 18, the senior BNP leader secured interim bail from the High Court in two cases filed at Paltan and another in Motijheel police stations until the chargesheet was submitted to the trial court.

The Appellate Division upheld the order.

In the three cases at Paltan Police Station, he secured bail from the High Court on June 21.

After hearing an appeal by the state challenging the HC order, the Appellate Division ordered the government to arrange medical check-up for the BNP leader.

Complying with the order, the BSMMU authorities on July 12 submitted a medical report stating that Fakhrul needed time for better treatment.
