He responded on Monday, two days after Khaleda said election should be held under a “neutral government or whatever be its name”.

Speaking at a discussion, Sengupta said: “It’s not clear what she wants to say. Khaleda or the BNP has to clarify the statement.”

The BNP has long been demanding the reinstatement of the non-party caretaker government system that the Awami League-led government had scrapped.

The BNP boycotted the last polls held under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s administration.

The ruling Awami League, however, rejected the demand.

At a meeting at her office on Saturday evening, the BNP chief said the name of the election-time government was not important.

She demanded a ‘fair election’ under a ‘neutral government’ or by whatever name it might be called.

Sengupta, the Awami League’s Advisory Council member, said: “Do they want an unelected caretaker government? Or, have they given up on that demand? They must make that clear.”

Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh.
