The result of the daylong voting was announced on Sunday night during the second session of the Awami League student front’s 28th National Convention at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka.

After inaugurating the convention on Saturday, ruling party President Sheikh Hasina suggested the formation of the new leadership through election.

A total of 2,819 among 3,138 councillors from the BCL’s 110 district-level units cast their votes to elect the central leadership for the next two years.

Sohag bagged 2,690 votes while Jakir secured 2,676 votes.

Sunday’s polls only elected the president and the general secretary.

A media statement later at night said Azizul Haque Rana was made Vice-President, Asaduzzaman Nadim Joint General Secretary and Mobarak Hossain Organising Secretary.

Chhatra League leaders said a full committee would be announced later.

Forty candidates had battled it out in the balloting.

Twelve of them contended for the president’s post while 28 had vied for the general secretary’s position.

Sohag, who was the outgoing central committee’s environment affairs secretary, did his honours and master’s from Dhaka University’s linguistics department.

He is studying for a second master’s degree in disaster management at the same university.

An active Chhatra League member during his college days, Sohag later became the general secretary of Ziaur Rahman Hall BCL unit at Dhaka University.

His brothers Arif Hossain Sumon and Mahbubur Rahman Sohel are vice-president and member, respectively, of the BCL branch in Sweden.

Jakir was the assistant secretary of the outgoing BCL central committee. Earlier, he was a member of the Ziaur Rahman Hall unit committee.

After graduating from the political science department at Dhaka University, Jakir is currently pursuing an M.Phil degree in the same subject.

He is also studying at the Bangabandhu Law College for a law degree.

After the results were announced, the outgoing president and general secretary, Badiuzzaman Shohag and Siddiqui Nazmul Alam, introduced Sohag and Jakir at the annual convention in presence of the former and present leaders of both the student organisation and Awami League.

Shohag said they would take the newly elected president and general secretary to Prime Minister Hasina on Monday after paying homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the Father of the Nation’s mural at Dhanmondi-32 in Dhaka.
