Talking to reporters in Dhaka on Monday, the ruling party’s Presidium member Mohammed Nasim argued the government had no reason to ‘try and ruin’ the BNP.

Khaleda said on Saturday: “The BNP is now the most popular party in Bangladesh. That’s why they (government) are out to destroy it.”

She made the remark while speaking to reporters after exchanging Eid greetings with diplomats, her party activists, and people from all walks of life in Dhaka.

During a surprise visit to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Health Minister Nasim said: “If your (Khaleda’s) party is so popular, how can it be destroyed?”

Another Presidium member, Obaidul Quader, said in Feni on Monday: “If the BNP ever suffers a split, the party’s infighting will be responsible for it.”

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Quader told reporters: “The government is smoothly running the affairs of the state. The BNP is not a cause of worry for the government at this moment.”

Advisory Council member and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed wondered why the government would even try to destroy the BNP.

“The Awami League is not at all concerned about the BNP, which doesn’t practise democracy and is run by a mother-and-son duo where leaders and activists have no role to play,” he said.

Nasim and Quader were also asked about the possibility of another Cabinet reshuffle.

Nasim said: “It’s solely the prime minister’s discretion to decide any Cabinet change. She will decide if any change in the Cabinet is needed.”

Quader said he had not got any hint of any further reshuffle.

Health Minister Nasim visited several wards at the BSMMU and enquired about condition of the patients.

In Feni, Minister Quader inaugurated a footbridge at Lalpole over the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.

The 33-feet bridge has been constructed as part of the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway Four-Lane Project.
