He came up with statistics on boat accidents while visiting the Barisal launch terminal on Saturday.

Khan said there were between 20 and 31 boat accidents every year between 2001 and 2006.

From 2009, when the Awami League came to power, there had been between five and 16 boat accidents every year, he said.

There had been only two boat accidents so far this year in Bangladesh, Khan said.

The government led by BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami ruled Bangladesh from 2001 to 2006.

Khan said his ministry will team up with other concerned departments and the district administrations to ensure safe journey for Eid holidaymakers through waterways.

He admitted that the vessels were carrying more passengers than capacity, because the number of vessels was not sufficient.

Khan, however, urged all to avoid unsafe travel.
