She claims the ruling party has increased the civil servants’ salaries only to consolidate its power.

“Prices of essentials are rising. The general people are having a hard time putting food on the plate but the government is busy looting and finding ways to hold on to power,” she alleged at an Iftar on Monday.

“This illegal government has raised the civil servants’ salaries to consolidate its grip on power,” the former prime minister claimed.

The proposed hike will be effective from July 1.

Khaleda’s party and allies boycotted the 2014 general elections, giving the ruling Awami League-led alliance a virtual walkover.

Since then, the 20-Party alliance has been pressing for a snap election under a ‘neutral’ administration.

The BNP chief criticised the government’s ‘clampdown’ on her party activists.

She said the BNP and its allies had come together to “save the country”.

“We’ll protect the young generation and ensure good governance,” she said.

“We want to restore the rule of law, people’s basic rights and democracy.”
