City corporation election expense account submission ends Friday

Those who contested in the city corporation elections must submit their statement of electoral expenses by Friday.

The Election Commission says it will take legal steps against the candidates failing to meet the deadline.
 
The mayors of the Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation, Annisul Huq and Sayeed Khokon, already submitted their accounts, their aides said.
 
They also said Huq and Khokon showed that their expenses were within the limit fixed by the EC.
 
EC Deputy Secretary Mihir Sarwar Morshed, who was a returning officer in the Apr 28 polls, said the gazette of the results had been published on Apr 30.
 
“In line with that, every candidate will have to submit the accounts within May 29 (Friday),” he said.
 
According to rules, candidates can submit the expense statements to the returning officers or the EC by post.
 
Morshed urged all candidates to meet the deadline, adding that not all of them had done so yet. 
 
Overshooting the deadline would invite legal action, he said. 
 
The law stipulates a maximum of seven years jail in such cases.
