Meghalaya police took him into custody immediately after the release on Tuesday.

He was taken to the Sadar Police Station and is expected to be produced at Shillong's local court on Wednesday.

Doctors at NEIGRIHMS described the BNP leader’s health condition as stable but said he was in much pain because of the kidney stone.

A hospital source said doctors were to operate upon Ahmed on Tuesday to remove the stone but his wife Hasina Ahmed refused to allow any operation in Shillong.

NEIGRIHMS' acting Superintendent Bhaskar Borgohain said Ahmed was discharged around 4pm (local time) after a medical board, monitoring his health, examined him.

Ahmed’s family says it is worried that India might hand him over to Bangladesh considering the Interpol red notice on him.

It will land him in much trouble, they fear.

Hasina wants to take her husband to Singapore for treatment and says she is confident the Indian court would grant him bail on medical grounds.

Ahmed's lawyer SP Mahanta has also assured Hasina and her family that Ahmed will get bail from the court for medical treatment.

Hasina had applied for bail in a lower court in Shillong last Friday and a hearing will be held on May 29.

But, the Meghalaya police are likely to seek custody of Ahmed for further investigation.

The BNP leader was arrested on May 11 in Shillong for trespassing.

He was first treated at the Shillong Civil Hospital and later at NEIGRIHMS as he was sick.

Meghalaya police say they are investigating how Ahmed managed to land in Shillong without any legal documents after being allegedly kidnapped in Bangladesh.
