She also said the people wanted to see the course of democracy unhindered and were against violence and destruction.

Elections to three city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong were held on Apr 28.

Candidates backed by the ruling Awami League won the mayor seats while BNP-supported candidates withdrew halfway on the day of the voting.

“The city corporation elections proved that the base of democracy is strong,”  Hasina said at a programme in Dhaka’s Hajaribagh on Saturday.

She came down hard on the BNP-led 20-party alliance for its nationwide blockade for three months in a row early this year.

“People don’t want destruction. They want peace, want to live happily. They want the course of democracy to continue,” she said.

Hasina expressed her gratitude to the Hajaribagh locals for electing Sayeed Khokan as the Dhaka South City Corporation's mayor.

In Hajaribagh, she inaugurated a fire station on Saturday and laid a foundation stone for the Mother and Children Welfare Centre.

The Hajaribagh station is the 286th fire service station.

Nearly 80 new fire stations have been launched across the country since 2009 while the construction of another 549 stations will be completed by 2016.
