He came out with the support on Wednesday, days after ruling Awami League MP Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury made an intemperate comments about the Sylhet University of Science and Technology professor.

In a Facebook post, Alam said: “We were with Zafar Iqbal sir and will be with him.”

In a recent programme, Sylhet-3 MP Chowdhury accused Prof Iqbal of being anti-Sylhet and said: “Had I been someone big, I would have whipped him."

Eminent citizens have condemned comment concerning Zafar Iqbal, the son of a freedom fighter.

The MP drew flak from social media users, who felt his remark was in bad taste.

Dhaka University students burned his effigy under the banner ‘General Students’.

Alam said in his Facebook post: “An MP can express his personal opinion. But it’s neither a statement of the Awami League nor of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.”

Chhatra League is the student front of the Awami League.

Alam said: “Chhatra League believes in non-communal spirit and never compromises with those who were against the Liberation War.

“Chhatra League will always work for non-communal force as it did in the past.”
