He has also accused the government of thwarting his party’s democratic activities.

“Such acts cannot usher any good,” the BNP standing committee member said at a programme in Dhaka on Saturday.

The special prayers programme was held at BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters marking the Shab-e-Meraj and in remembrance of former MP Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu.

Pintu died of heart complications on Apr 3 while serving a life sentence in a 2009 BDR mutiny case.

Muslims celebrate Shab-e-Meraj to commemorate the ascent of Prophet Muhammad to heaven to meet Allah.

Ahmed claimed there was no ‘democratic atmosphere’ in the country.

The BNP-led alliance boycotted the last general election. It has since been pressing for a snap election under a neutral government’s supervision.

It enforced a three-month-long blockade on the 2014 election’s first anniversary.

About 150 people were killed, mostly in arson, during the violent agitation.

“Violence, terrorism, and extremism will take place if the democratic forces are weakened,” Ahmed warned.

“It’s the government’s responsibility to restore a democratic environment.”
