The acting secretary general was taken to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital around 7:45am on Tuesday.
The panel of specialists consisting of professors Rafiqul Alam, Sajal Krishna Banerjee, Hasan Masud, Moniruzzaman Khan, Atiqur Rahman and Habibur Rahman saw him and suggested some tests.
The hospital’s director, Abdul Mazid Bhuiyan, said, “The medical board has seen him. He does not have any serious ailments at the moment.
“Doctors have suggested some tests for a routine check-up. According to the board’s findings, his physical condition is stable.
“His current physical condition is not such that he needs to be admitted right away,” Bhuiyan added.
An ultra-sonogram of the BNP leader was done around 1pm on advice from the board.
He was accompanied by his wife Rahat Ara Begum at the time. His family members complained that Fakhrul had ‘lost weight’.
Journalists approached Dr Rafiqul Alam, who headed the panel, beside the cabin Fakhrul was kept in. “He has heart ailments. He has a ring. And also back pain.”
When asked whether they had advised for his admission, the doctor said, “We have suggested some tests. The hospital authorities would decide whether he needs admission.
“We can give our follow-up suggestions once we have seen the reports. But he is doing well now.”
Jail Superintendent Prashant Kumar Banik said the BNP acting secretary general was sent to the medical facility after he was feeling ‘unwell’.
Jail hospital’s physician Md Anwar Hossain earlier said Fakhrul was suffering from ‘internal carotid artery block’. “He is also suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, high blood-pressure, diabetes and cardiac ailments. He needs to see several specialists.”
Director Bhuiyan said the BNP leader was released from his hospital around 3pm and prison authorities confirmed that he reached the jail roughly 45 minutes later.
Fakhrul is being held at Gazipur’s Kashimpur prison since Jan 8, two days after his arrest in several cases of sabotage.
The BNP leader was picked up when he emerged from a media briefing at the National Press Club amidst political turmoil over the anniversary of the 2014 national elections, which saw the Awami League government back in power.
