"BNP wanted to withdraw from the elections after killing people. But they didn't get the scope as the law enforcing agencies were alert,” she has said.

She made the allegation while exchanging greetings with the Buddhists on Buddha Purnima on Saturday.

“They (BNP) did the same thing on the election day as they did during the movement. They took part in the elections, they made announcement, but they were not present on the field,” Hasina said.

“They had no representative, agent, nothing,” she said.

“They withdrew from the race after three hours,” she added.

BNP announced the boycott of the city polls midway through the voting on Apr 28, alleging widespread rigging.

Buddhist Religious Welfare Trust and the religious affairs ministry organised the function at Ganabhaban.

The prime minister also referred to the killings that took place during the BNP-led alliance’s blockade.

“How perverted one can be to do such thing. They stayed at home after calling the movement. No one was on the field. They covertly burnt people alive by hurling cocktails. Their only job is to kill people,” Hasina said.

She also said people from all religions would live in Bangladesh with their rights fully protected.

She also referred to the 2012 attack on Buddhists in Cox’s Bazaar.

“We’ve built a new monastery for you,” she said, adding that it gave some succour to Buddhists.

Religious Affairs Minister Matior Rahaman and State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing were also present on the occasion.
