The polls to the Dhaka South, Dhaka North and Chittagong City Corporations are scheduled to take place on Apr 28.

The BNP have been demanding deployment of the troopers so the civic polls could be held in a free and fair manner.

The ruling party’s Publicity and Publications Secretary Hasan Mahmud at a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon said, “Awami League welcomes any decision the EC takes to ensure fair elections.”

Several leaders of the party had been saying that deployment of the army was not necessary during the civic polls.

Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta only a day earlier had protested the idea and said police, BGB and Ansar-VDP were enough to maintain law and order during the past local government elections.

The army will be deployed in the two cities as the ‘reserve and striking’ force from Apr 26 to 29.

Meanwhile, Hasan Mahmud at Tuesday’s media call claimed that the attack on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade at Karwan Bazar on Monday was staged.

He also demanded that the EC take actions against Khaleda’s campaign for her party-endorsed mayor candidates to ensure the sanctity of the city polls.
