The BNP-backed South Dhaka mayor candidate has been staying away from public view for some time.

The BNP leader’s wife said this while interacting with people at Fakirapul, Kachabazar, Folpotti, Arambagh, and the Bangabhaban Staff Quarter area on Monday morning.

The BNP’s Dhaka Metropolitan unit Convener Mirza Abbas has been away from public view since being implicated in an arson and explosion case that marked the BNP-led alliance’s agitation.

For the past few days, his wife Afroza Abbas has been conducting the mayoral campaign on his behalf.

She told reporters that Abbas’ election manifesto may be released on Wednesday.

Asked about the cases against Abbas, she said, “The cases are going through the legal process. Once they are resolved, he will join the election campaign.”

BNP Standing Committee Member Abbas is accused in 61 criminal cases, according to his affidavit filed with the election commission.

He moved High Court on Monday seeking bail in three cases.
