The list provided by the returning officer on Sunday afternoon, the last day for nomination submission, does not contain Manna’s name.

He is currently being held in custody over treason charges.

Meanwhile, Manna’s wife Meher Nigar demanded that her husband be sent abroad for medical treatment.

Speaking at a press conference at their Gulshan residence on Sunday noon, she said: “It is more important for us to save his life than an election or anything else.”

“I’m requesting that he be sent to hospital from prison for proper treatment. I am also requesting that he be sent abroad if necessary,” she said.

Nigar had raised the same demand at a press conference at the Nagorik Oikya headquarters in Dhaka 10 days back.

Nagorik Oikya Convener Manna was arrested on Feb 24 on charge of inciting the army following leak of his phone conversations with BNP Vice-Chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka and another unidentified person.

Police later filed a treason case against him. Now, he is in prison after being interrogated by the police for 20 days in two phases.

Manna’s arrest came several days after he announced his decision to contest in the mayoral election.

Nigar said: “He (Manna) was sent back to prison before treatment and necessary medical examinations following his admission to hospital after he fell sick repeatedly.”

“We’ve notice dilly-dally in offering him treatment. I’m deeply concerned about the life of my husband,” she added.

In one of the leaked telephone conversations, available with bdnews24.com, Manna is heard telling BNP leader Khoka to engineer clashes for occupying Dhaka University residential halls.

‘A few deaths’ during such a confrontation could destabilise the government, he is heard saying.

In another conversation with a person who has remained unidentified so far, he said he was keen to play a role in a possible military takeover.
