“The prime minister has chosen me to serve the people of Chittagong,” the ruling party’s metropolitan unit general secretary said.

“I want to work with everyone regardless of party affiliations .I hold Chittagong’s people very dear to me. I won’t feel sad even if they don’t elect me,” he told reporters on Saturday.

The Chittagong City Corporation election is slated to take place on Apr 28.

Apart from former Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Nasir, three-time Chittagong mayor and city Awami League President Mohiuddin Chowdhury, metropolitan unit Treasurer Abdus Salam and former MP Nurul Islam BSC had shown interest to fight for the office of mayor.

But Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina in a meeting Friday night chose Nasir to run for the upcoming polls.

After attending that meeting, Nasir, accompanied by Chittagong-11 MP MA Latif and other party leaders, returned to the port city earlier in the day in a flight from Dhaka.

Supporting Nasir’s nomination by the party, Mohiuddin Chowdhury on Saturday said he would campaign for Nasir and urged the people to vote for him.

The two, however, are yet to meet.

After returning home, Nasir met his family first and then offered special prayers at the Amanat Shah Mazar in the city.
