The prime minister told Parliament about her predicament on Wednesday.

Feni is the electoral constituency of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, whose father hailed from the area.

“Such a militant leader has emerged from Feni that nobody now wants it. I am in a bit of fix with Feni. After all, people of Feni have not done anything wrong,” she said.

A year ago, Khaleda while commenting on Hasina’s home district had said the name of Gopalganj would be changed.

Khaldea’s comment, made in a fit of rage after police prevented her from leaving her house on Dec29, 2013, had been an issue of discussion for quite some time.

The prime minister made the comment on Feni while talking about creation of new divisions for decentralisation of administration.

Khaleda’s father Eskander Majumder hailed from Feni, but later settled in Dinajpur, where she grew up.

She had been contesting parliamentary elections from Feni-1 constituency.

The prime minister made the comment while replying to a question from Jatiya Party’s Firoz Rashid.

He wanted to know whether Gopalganj would be made a separate division.

Hasina said the matter was formally discussed, adding Greater Faridpur, Greater Mymensingh and Greater Comilla would be made separate divisions.

In this context, she said, “We have to consider certain things about Feni. It needed to be discussed whether it should be integrated with Chittagong or Comilla.”

At that time a parliamentarian from Chittagong shook his head to indicate his opposition to keep Feni in Chittagong division.
After that, the prime minister said, “Honourable Speaker, people of Chittagong do not want to keep Feni. So, will now people of Comilla agree to take it?”

Considering geographical factors, the prime minister, however, was of the view that Feni should be placed under Comilla division.
