Former MPs Laila Begum and Nargis Ali, Nilufar Yasmin, Rokeya Sultana Tamanna and Jharna Begum were on their way to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s office at Gulshan when they were detained on Thursday.

Police stopped them in front of the Gulshan Model School and College around 2pm.

They told police that they were carrying food for Khaleda and would leave after delivering it at the office gate.

The law enforcers, however, hauled them in a car and took them to Gulshan Police Station. The other Mahila Dal activists left the place at once.

Assistant Commissioner of Gulshan Police Nurul Alam said 12 to 14 BNP woman activists tried to take out a protest march. “They are being interrogated at the station,” he added.

The BNP chief has been staying in the office since Jan 3 after being barred by police to leave amid tension over programmes marking the first anniversary of the last general election on Jan 5. BNP boycotted the polls.

BNP leaders have alleged that police are not allowing any leader or activist to enter the office for over two weeks.

Food meant for people in the office was also being turned back, they said.
