He led activists of the Awami League’s front organisations such as Sramik League, Mohila League and others to a gathering near the Gulshan-2 intersection and then marched to Khaleda’s office on Monday.

While a huge crowd held a rally in front of the office on Road 86, a regular Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was on at the Secretariat.

Cabinet Secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said after the meeting that, though three things were on the agenda, one concerning the shipping ministry had to be dropped.

"The Ports Act, 1908 needed to be amended. But the matter could not be discussed due to the minister’s absence," the secretary said.

Since the Jan 5 nationwide blockade called by the BNP-led alliance, a host of workers’ organisations have protested the disruption.

President of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation Shajahan Khan led a similar protest on Monday.
