The Ministry of LGRD and Cooperatives issued an order to this effect on Wednesday.

The order says since the court has received chargesheet against him and he is in jail now, his continuing in the office of mayor runs against public interest and is not advisable from the administrative point of view.

BNP’s central leader Ariful is a member of Sylhet Metropolitan BNP’s convening committee. He was elected mayor last year.

Earlier, the local government ministry suspended Habiganj Municipality Mayor GK Gaus on the same grounds.

Police recently incorporated the names of 11 people including Chowdhury, Gaus and former primer minister Khaleda Zia’s political secretary Harris Chowdhury in the revised supplementary chargesheet.

On Dec 21 last year, a court issued arrest warrant for the 11. It refused the Sylhet mayor bail and sent him to jail when he surrendered to the court on Dec 30.

Former finance minister Kibria was fatally wounded in a grenade attack on Jan 27, 2005 while he was returning from a rally in Habiganj Sadar during the 2001-6 BNP regime. He died on the way to Dhaka.
