A statement by its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with the appeal on Sunday.

Tensions has been rising between the ruling Awami League and the BNP over the anniversary of the 10th national polls with the former planning celebrations and the latter a series of protest rallies.

"I am not only asking the leaders and activists of the party and the alliance, but to all the patriotic and democratic parties, to gather in strength and hold protests across the country including Dhaka," the statement quoted Mirza Fakhrul saying.

Amid the tensions over Jan 5, police has cordoned off BNP chief Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office since Saturday night forcing her to spend the night there.

Police also 'picked' up BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi from its Naya Paltan headquarters Saturday and locked it up.

"I call upon all to observe the Murder of Democracy Day at any cost to give a befitting response to the autocracy of the rulers," the senior BNP leader said in the statement.

Police had also turned up at his Uttara home early morning Sunday. But the BNP leader and his family are not at home since Friday, said the house's caretaker 'Kajal'.
