“They (BNP) will be resisted in every locality,” 14-Party Alliance Spokesperson Mohammed Nasim told reporters after a meeting of the combine on Sunday, a day before the BNP’s countrywide shutdown.

He said: “The general strike will be as lukewarm as it was in Gazipur (on Saturday). People won’t respond to it. They’ll keep their businesses open and vehicles will run as usual on roads.”

Reacting to BNP’s threat to thwart the ruling party’s programmes, the Awami League Presidium member said: “No one has the ability to resist the 14-Party (Alliance).”

Ruling out BNP’s demand for a snap election, he said: “There is no chance of any general election before 2019.”

BCL, Juba League to remain alert

Bangladesh Chhatra League and Juba League, student and youth fronts, respectively, of the ruling party, announced that their leaders and activists would stand alert during Sunday’s shutdown.

Juba League Chairman Omar Faruq Chowdhury told bdnews24.com: “(Leaders and activists) have to remain alert with the people against those who want to deter Bangladesh’s development and progress.”
