Gazipur strike evokes lukewarm response
A day-long shutdown enforced by the BNP and its allies in Gazipur has ended amid reports of sporadic violence.

Strikers vandalised several vehicles including one used by police on Saturday morning.
Nine people were arrested over the day's violence.
Traffic was lighter than usual but offices, factories, businesses, and shops operated as usual.
BNP-led 20-Party Alliance called for the shutdown on Friday after the local administration banned gatherings at Khaleda Zia's proposed rally venue.
Police were put on high alert at the Bhawal Badre Alam Government College ground on Saturday.
The district administration imposed Section 144 at the college ground and surrounding areas amid simmering tensions after ruling Awami League's student front announced to thwart Khaleda's rally.
The BNP alleged government deliberately 'engineered a situation' to foil the rally.
Strikers took out a procession in the morning and damaged two vehicles before police dispersed them.
Meanwhile, local administration withdrew an embargo on gatherings in the evening.
Police said Gazipur Reporters' Club General Secretary MA Farid has filed a case over the vandalism, attacks and mugging.
It named Gazipur City Corporation's Mayor MA Mannan, the district's BNP unit chief Fazlur Rahman Milon, among others.
