The BNP-backed mayor has sought local administration's assistance at a press conference on Friday.

Gazipur district administration imposed Section 144 at Bhawal Badre Alam Government College ground and surrounding areas from 2pm Friday amid tensions after ruling Awami League student front announced to thwart Khaleda's rally.

"We're shocked at the administration's decision," Mannan said.

Deputy Commissioner Md Nurul Islam said neither the BNP nor the Chhatra League had been granted rally permission.

Gazipur's Superintendent of Police Harurun Rashid said they were imposing a ban on gathering as the two sides had failed to reach an agreement.

BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged it was part of the government's ploy.

Mannan alleged the ban on gathering was to "facilitate a certain group".

"We still seek the administration's assistance. We request them to withdraw the ban and give us rally permission," the mayor said.
