Speaking at a meeting at the party chief's office in Dhanmondi on Thursday, the Awami League joint general secretary expressed anguish over the attack on MP Chhabi Biswas the day before.

Addressing BNP leaders, he said after the meeting, "Stop these attacks or else people may attack your cars, too, in retaliation."

Amid a clash between the BNP and Awami League supporters in Bakshibazar, the Netrokona-1 MP was attacked in front of the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. The assailants, the BNP supporters, set his car on fire.

The Awami League MP suffered head injuries and was admitted to the hospital.

Police and the Awami League have blamed the BNP supporters for the attack. But the BNP's acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir denied the allegations and in turn blamed Bangladesh Chhatra League for the clashes.

Hanif said BNP chief Khaleda Zia engineered the incident outside the court to obstruct the trial process knowing that she would be convicted of corruption.
