The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Kumar Dey ordered the BNP leader to appear before it on Jan 24.

SM Nur-e-Alam Siddique, a leader of an Awami League front organisation, lodged a complaint with the court on Sept 1 over Mirza Fakhrul's statement terming Sheikh Hasina a "killer" and the Awami League a "gang of murderers".

Paltan police investigated the matter and reported to the court on Thursday. The case was then accepted and the BNP leader was summoned, according to the plaintiff's lawyers Dulal Mitra and Shariful Islam.

The case refers to Mirza Fakhrul's statement made on Aug 24 at the Naya Paltan headquarters of BNP.

The senior BNP leader's comments defamed Sheikh Hasina, it says.

Meanwhile, another libel case against Mirza Fakhrul, over comments on ruling party leader Quamrul Islam, was scrapped by a Dhaka court on Wednesday as the plaintiff was constantly absent during hearings.
