It has further stated that it does not attain power through conspiracy and accused the Awami League of having a dubious history of hatching plots to be in government.

"Begum Khaleda Zia does not need to hatch a conspiracy to be in the government. She did not suddenly come to politics," BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told a media briefing Saturday.

In a press conference on Friday, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina warned of legal steps against government officials if they had met Khaleda breaking the law.

Her comments came a day after media reports claimed the former leader of the opposition had a meeting with a group of government officials at her Gulshan office.

Hasina said such late night meetings usually gave rise to questions and recalled a similar meeting of bureaucrats at Mahmudur Rahman's office in 2006.

She wondered what Thursday's alleged meeting was all about.

Mirza Fakhrul claimed on Friday that the Awami League supported HM Ershad's takeover in 1982 and imposition of the state of emergency in 2007. "It is the Awami League, which has been hatching conspiracies."

He rubbished news reports over Thursday's meetings and said: "Meetings happen all the time at the Gulshan office. The party's advisors come in every day. But there's no truth in the media reports over Thursday's meeting."
