Hasina repeating Mujib’s mistake: Fakhrul

BNP’s acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is committing the same mistake her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman did by trying to establish one-party BAKSAL rule.

“There is a conspiracy to put the country under one-party rule. Sheikh Mujib also did the blunder of establishing one-party rule in the country by throttling democracy. Now his daughter is trying to do the same,” said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday.

Speaking at a programme of the National Awami Party (NAP) to commemorate Mawlana Bhashai on his death anniversary, he criticised Hasina for her remark on the BNP in Parliament.

“The illegitimate prime minister and the president of Awami League claimed that the people were not responding to the opposition’s (BNP-led alliance) movement … but the government killed 310 people, and made 65 disappear in the three months prior to January 5 elections and yet could not ensure even 5 percent turnout during the polling.”
The people did not accept the election that saw Awami League returning to power, he said, adding that the US, UK, UN and EU too had the same view.
“There is no alternative to holding another election participated by all parties … we must prepare for it.”
Fakhrul claimed a fair investigation into the frequent gold hauls at airports would reveal that ruling party members were involved.
“Smuggled gold are caught every day. Top officials of Biman (Bangladesh Airlines) and civil aviation are involved in this. A fair probe will reveal involvement of ruling party members in this.”
Five, including a deputy general manager of Biman, were detained by the detective branch and sent to four-day remand for their alleged complicity in the gold smuggling.
