"Joy is the new leader of the new generation. He's young. What can I say about him? I won't comment on a personal note, but I can only ask him to stop speaking like an imbecile . Speaking ill of Ziaur Rahman would be tantamount to denying Bangladesh's history and its roots," said senior party leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Ruling party leaders had earlier said that Tarique Rahman was acting like an 'imbecile' when the BNP leader in exile said that Awami League was a party of 'disgraceful people' and Sheikh Hasina was the 'disgraced leader of a disgraceful group'.

BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul said on Saturday that Joy would not be accepted by the new generation, if he continues to 'speak like other Awami League leaders'.

Speaking at discussion on Friday, the prime minister's son dubbed BNP as 'a party of Razakars' and wondered whether its founder Ziaur Rahman, who commanded a sector of the freedom fighters, had any belief in the spirit of Bangladesh's independence.

"Aren't those who are in politics with Razakars also Razakars .The BNP is a party of Razakars.

"If they want to prove otherwise, they must break their alliance with the party of Razakars (Jamaat)."

Joy went on, "They (BNP) cannot take back one thing - who brought the Razakars back? Who brought them back to independent Bangladesh? It was Ziaur Rahman.

"I would question the freedom fighter who brought these war criminals back to the country .”

Jamaat-e-Islami, which led the collaborators of Pakistan Army during the 1971 Liberation War, was banned from politics after Bangladesh's birth. But in 1978, then President Gen Ziaur Rahman rehabilitated Jamaat back into politics.

Speaking at a discussion on Saturday, Mirza Fakhrul said that Ziaur Rahman and the Liberation War cannot be separated. "Ziaur Rahman called for the war- that is the truth. Those, who speak ill of him, want to erase his name from the history, will never succeed."

He came down hard over Joy's comment and said: "Joy was born in Bangladesh under the security of Pakistani army. He spent most of his childhood in India and now lives in the US. The people know how much he feels for this country."
