Party’s acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday criticised the ruling Awami League saying it “does not believe in democracy”.

He said Imam’s comments had made it clear how the ruling party won the last general elections.

“We thank him for speaking the truth,” Alamgir told a discussion in Dhaka.

Imam last week assured to “look after” the activists of the ruling party’s student front who cleared written tests of any competitive examinations.

He also spoke about the ruling party supporters’ role in the police administration before the polls.

The BNP has lambasted Imam claiming it showed the government’s partisan approach towards the administration.

Several ruling party leaders criticised Imam’s comments and media reports claimed the prime minister, too, had expressed indignation.

“Now the Awami League leaders say, ‘HT Imam made the comments as he is not a seasoned politician’.”

“But it is true that he spoke the truth,” said Fakhrul.

The BNP, which boycotted the polls has been dubbing the government an “illegal one” and demanding a snap election under a ‘neutral body’, but the ruling party has repeatedly rejected it.

“The Awami League leaders say they will establish a second BAKSAL. They say development comes first and democracy later. This is the Awami League’s concept,” the BNP leader said.
