At a discussion on Friday afternoon, he said that the Awami League was scared of BNP founder Zia since he did what the Awami League could not.

“They (Awami League) were supposed to pronounce independence (of Bangladesh), but they could not. Zia pronounced it.”

Bangladesh’s founding president Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman formed BAKSAL (Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League) through the fourth amendment to the Constitution in January 1975 banning all other parties.
The party was dissolved after Mujibur Rahman was killed on Aug 15, 1975.
Pro-BNP physicians’ forum, Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh organised the discussion titled ‘Shaheed Zia and Democracy’ at the National Press Club to mark the ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’.
