The scuffle began at the city’s Court Station Mor around Wednesday noon, said Rajparha Police OC Mehedi Hasan.

Police fired 15 to 20 rounds from their shotguns after the Jamaat men threw brickbats at them, he said.

Activists of Jamaat and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir took out a procession in the area around 2pm, bdnews24.com correspondent reported from the site.

Two police pickup vans were seen following them.

The supporters numbering around 400 held a rally at the intersection. They then started hurling brickbats at the police while leaving the site, prompting police to fire teargas shells and blank shots.

Meanwhile, five activists of Jamaat and Shibir have been arrested while they were trying to bring out a procession from Dewarparha of the city’s Motihar intersection around 1pm.

Motihar Police Station’s OC Alamgir Hossain said the others have managed to flee.
