It also asked for moving a rally by 20-Party alliance in Comilla from Nov 7 to Nov 6.

“We’ve decided to hold a rally in Dhaka to observe the National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

“A letter requesting permission to hold the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan at 2pm has been sent to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s office this morning,” Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told bdnews24.com on Monday.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman was asked if the BNP was going to get permission. He said he did not have information on the matter.

Unrest prevailed after the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members on Aug 15, 1975.

Then the army chief, Major General Ziaur Rahman had been confined to the cantonment.

By the night of Nov 6, troops in the Dhaka Cantonment revolted. On Nov 7, 1975, soldiers and civilians freed Ziaur Rahman from confinement, paving the way for Zia to take power. Gen Zia later formed the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

However, the ruling Awami League observes Nov 7 as 'killing of soldiers and freedom fighters', and the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal as the day of civil-military revolution.
