Accept early polls demand or will force you out: Khaleda to govt

The BNP, which boycotted the January general election, has threatened to bring down the government if it does not accept the demand for an interim election under non-partisan supervision.

Chairperson Khaleda Zia sounded the threat on Thursday in her address to a public rally in Nilphamari as part of her party’s efforts to sway the public opinion for an early election.

“A government of the people will be established through an election after removing this government,” she said as her supporters cheered.

Former prime minister Khaleda alleged the Awami League-led government did not work for the people’s welfare.

She blamed the government for increasing prices of agricultural tools. “The farmers don’t even get their production cost [selling their produces],” she said.

“The government is busy plundering while prices of commodities are spiralling out of the people’s reach,” Khaleda alleged.

This was her fifth public appearance outside Dhaka since January this year.

Khaleda, who leads the 20-Party Alliance, is scheduled to address a number of rallies as part of her mass contact programme.

She claimed the Awami League had denied people their voting rights in the Jan 5 polls.

“We’ll bring down the government and organise an election under a neutral government. Everyone will get back their voting rights,” the BNP chief said.

The former prime minister claimed the government was ‘living on lies’.

“They cannot last long,” she added.
