He made the comment at a gathering to celebrate the 50th birth anniversary of Sheikh Russell, son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on Saturday.

The minister for disaster management and relief claimed the people were not responding to the BNP's calls for demonstrations.

"That's why they're trying to start a demonstration by any means,” he alleged.

The BNP-led alliance boycotted the Jan 5 national polls demanding a non-party body's supervision to oversee the elections. They have been demanding an interim election since.

“No matter how much you conspire, the next election will not be held in Bangladesh before 2019," Maya said, adding that the only way to remove an elected government was through ballots.

The announcement of taking BRAC University teacher Karim's body to the Shaheed Minar had created controversy prompting the Dhaka University authorities to deny his family permission.

Piash Karim, better known for his TV talk shows, had stirred controversies by commenting against the Ganajagaran Mancha movement and trials of suspected war criminals.
