India needed for Bangladesh democracy: BNP’s Khandker Mahbub

India’s support was needed to ‘save’ democracy in Bangladesh, BNP’s Khandker Mahbub Hossain has said.

“India is a neighbouring country, the world’s largest democracy. Their ethical support, not interference, is required to save democracy,” quipped the advisor to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia during a seminar at the Supreme Court on Sunday.

Hossain is Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council and President of Supreme Court Bar Association. Indian lawyers were present as he addressed the seminar.

The BNP has been accusing its arch-rival Awami League of ‘hijacking democracy’ after it sat out the general election on Jan 5.
The Awami League returned to govern Bangladesh for the second consecutive term through the polls.
The two-day seminar was organised by Bangladesh Law Times and chaired by Assistant Attorney General Ashek Momen. Asit Baran Basu, Chairman of the West Bengal Bar Council and Bangladesh Law Times Editor SN Goswami spoke during the event.
Former Supreme Court judge Justice Md Delwar Hossain and Deputy Attorney General Abdus Samad Mondol are expected to present essays on highest punishment and visa laws respectively.
