Party's spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday accused the government of 'torturing the opposition'.

He alleged the 'timid' government had distanced itself from the people and was enacting laws one after the other to stay in power for ever.

"We must forge a national unity to oust the government through a popular movement," Fakhrul told a discussion in Dhaka.

The BNP chief and other leaders are being implicated in cases to keep them away from launching a movement, he alleged.
Fakhrul criticised the 16th Constitutional Amendment for giving back Parliament the power to remove Supreme Court judges on grounds of misconduct or incompetence.
"The Parliament, formed through a voter-less Jan 5 balloting, does not have any public representatives and is run by one person.
"Power to impeach judges has been given to such a House so that the judges cannot judge try a case independently," Fakhrul alleged.
