Eight including Lakshmipur Jamaat chief held

Police detained eight activists including Lakshmipur municipality unit Jamaat-e-Islami chief on Thursday during the countrywide strike.

Lakshmipur Sadar Police Station's sub-inspector Zillur Rahman said that they were arrested from a procession at Miyar Rasta area on the Lakshmipur-Ramgati road.

Lakshmipur municipality unit Jamaat chief Nur Nabi Faruk were among those arrested, said the police officer.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Nasim Mia said that the law enforcers are alert and determined to prevent any untoward incident.
According to locals, Jamaat supporters took out the procession on the Lakshmipur-Ramgati road and tried to stop traffic. A police patrol immediately intervened and detained eight including local Jamaat leader Faruk.
Jamaat leader and war crimes convict Delwar Hossain Sayedee's death sentence by war crimes tribunal was reduced to 'imprisonment until death' on Wednesday by the Supreme Court.
The party, which opposed Bangladesh's independence in 1971, called a 48-hour strike on Thursday and Sunday to mount pressure for release of its senior leader Sayedee.
