The BNP’s Dhaka metropolitan unit Convenor Mirza Abbas claims they cannot form a full committee in two months’ time despite central committee’s orders because the government is putting up hurdles.

A policymaker in the party, Abbas was made convenor of the unit’s new committee on July 18 after the previous one led by Sadeque Hossain Khoka was dissolved.

Since then, Abbas has been holding meetings with a Sept 18 deadline hanging overheard. The convenor committee had another meeting on Monday at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters.

However, the senior leader after the meeting told reporters that 15 teams were working at ward and grassroots levels in the metropolis.

They were making progress despite obstacles in several areas, he added.

“But it won’t be possible to form the full committee within the deadline due to the obstructions.”

“The present government is a fascist government. They are hindering our organisational activities all the time. They are also not allowing us to hold rallies,” Abbas said.
