Speaking at a discussion on Monday, Fakhrul alleged that Awami League was planning to introduce a “one-party rule”, which it had failed to do in 1975.

“In the pretext of democracy, they are quietly taking control of all the democratic institutions. They have only one goal – to introduce BAKSAL through illusive means,” he said.

Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League, or BAKSAL, was the only legal political party in the country for a brief period in 1975 before the Father of the Nation was assassinated.

Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, said the government’s moves like the fifteenth amendment, cancellation of caretaker government system and the broadcast policy were parts of its “blueprint to murder democracy”.
“The Awami League president and her party are consciously murdering democracy. Her Jan 5 election was a farce. The government that was subsequently formed is illegal. The parliament, which has no representation of the people, is illegal.”
He called on the government to engage in dialogue to hold early elections.
“There is still time. Cancel your anti-people laws and policies and come to the table,” he said.
Fakhrul called on everyone to unite against the “fascist government”.
The discussion was hosted by the National People’s Party, a member of the 20-party alliance.
