"Programmes for the movement will be finalised soon. We will hold a meeting of the standing committee and the alliance partners. We will then inform the media," BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Saturday.

BNP, which boycotted the 10th national elections, has been demanding fresh polls under non-partisan supervision, but the Awami League government rejected the suggestion.

The BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia then announced that her party would launch a movement to press its demands after Eid-ul-Fitr.
Awami League leaders, however, have expressed doubts about the BNP's ability of carrying the people with them.

"This government has been forcibly sitting in office without a popular mandate. Their ministers are provoking us about the movement. All we want is a participatory and proper election," he said.

"If they do not respond to our call, carry on with their illegal rule and oppression on the opposition, the BNP will not sit quietly," Rizvi warned.

Rizvi assured that their movement would be peaceful.

"But if the government responds violently, we will have no choice but to resort to alternative means."

He drew parallels between ministers who were ridiculing the BNP's movement plan and the acts of Tikka Khan in '71 and Ershad’s during his military rule.
